Profile
John M. DiMatteo is a renowned trial and appellate attorney with over 30 years of experience in intellectual property litigation. John has built an impressive career representing major corporations such as Johnson & Johnson, Philips Electronics, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and Bloomberg LLP in complex infringement cases. His extensive experience includes high-stakes trials before U.S. Federal Courts and representations before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and various other appellate courts across the United States.
John’s technical expertise spans engineering, computer science, and biology, enabling him to litigate cases involving cutting-edge technologies such as Near Field Communication (NFC) chips, cam phaser hydraulics in internal combustion engines, short hairpin RNAi for gene expression regulation, voice-over-IP in cable modems, hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants, and high-speed data compression.
In 2017, John was named an Intellectual Property Trailblazer by The National Law Journal, a prestigious recognition awarded to only 50 individuals nationwide who have significantly advanced the field of intellectual property law. This honor reflects his groundbreaking work, including his role as lead trial counsel for Fortune 500 companies in high-value patent litigation before federal courts and the International Trade Commission. Early in his career, John argued the seminal case of Hyatt v. Boone, which determined IP rights to the microprocessor—an innovation foundational to the personal computing industry and modern appliances. He also played a pivotal role in securing substantial recoveries for Johnson & Johnson by advising a strategic patent reissue, ultimately leading to billion-dollar settlements against Medtronic and other infringers.
John’s career has been marked by numerous accolades, including recognition as a leading intellectual property lawyer by Chambers USA and a Litigation Star by Benchmark Litigation. He was also a 2012 BTI Client Service All-Star and consistently named in New York Super Lawyers from 2006 to 2017.
His educational background includes an LLM in Trial Advocacy from Temple University, a Juris Doctor from St. John’s University, and master’s degrees in Biotechnology and Computer Science from Columbia University and Polytechnic University, respectively. John has also held leadership positions as Chair of IP Practice at Holwell, Shuster & Goldberg LLP, and Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, and served as a partner at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP.
Beyond his legal achievements, John demonstrated his adventurous spirit by circumnavigating the globe with his wife on his own 50’ sailboat with the World ARC in 2018-2019, further showcasing his leadership and determination both in and out of the courtroom.
